Featured Indie Book: Beside My Doorstep (Chloe Zola)

Beside My Doorstep (Chloe Zola)
Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Memoir / Creative Non-Fiction Beside My Doorstep by Chloe Zola.

"This is one of those books you pick up and cant put down. The authors reality has moments in the book that everyone can relate to. I would definitely recommend this book." - Reader Review

The Book has been self-published via Amazon KDP and is available as eBook on Amazon – 189 pages - released in December 2012.

About the Book

Another messy and mundane memoir exploring what “normal” means for modern American families. A string of stories that are as bizarre as they are heartwarming, Beside My Doorstep follows Zola and her split-level family as they move from house to house over the course of twenty years. Being the only interracial family on the block, they use garlic instead of antibiotics, fight in a way that the Italian ancestors would be proud of, cringe during the holiday season, put Heineken in sippy-cups, narrowly escape numerous violent incidents in Barbados, is accused more than once of being involved in a drug cartel, leave the country when Mom becomes fed up with the American lifestyle, and doesn't apologize for any of it.

The narrative lens is that of a young girl from the midwest who not only writes her story of growing up, but elaborates on her parent’s eccentric past and how the history of their lives still lingers in the day-to-day.

Raw and genuine, Zola illustrates a profound mother-daughter relationship centering on the wild and persistent ghosts of her mother’s past- a deeply-rooted bond that is heavy and brilliant and constantly burning. Written by a young woman with an extraordinary talent for observation and compassion, Beside My Doorstep paints a picture that is both universal and deeply personal in its dysfunction, humor, tragedy, and discovery- all themes inherent in the storm of growing up.

Indie Author Interview: J. A. Huss

Interview with J. A. Huss - Author of the New Adult Science Fiction CLUTCH (I Am Just Junco Dot Com).

J. A. Huss writes new adult speculative and science fiction as well as an entire line of science non-fiction textbooks that cater to home learners.

She has an undergraduate degree in equine science and a graduate degree in forensic toxicology. She adores everything science and considers herself a major geek! Her first series is called I Am Just.

Interview with J. A. Huss

Interview w/ Author J.A. Huss
Author J.A. Huss
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
J. A. Huss: What is your (writing) background?
I have been writing non-fiction science textbooks for about four years prior to beginning my first fiction book. I have no formal training in writing – in fact, I have no English or literature degree at all. I went to school to be a scientist and that’s why writing science fiction comes so easy to me.

Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who or what are your writing influences?
I am inspired by all authors that touch me with their characters. Mostly it’s science fiction these days, and honestly I think this comes from reading Madeleine L'Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time series and Robert C. O’Brien’s Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH when I was ten. That’s when I really started to think about stories with a science slant to them and it was exciting.

But Jane Smiley wrote a literary book called Horse Heaven that had racehorses as major characters and that started me down the road to understanding how this character development thing worked. I have an undergraduate degree in equine science so I love, LOVE, love that book, but it’s also the epitome of a character-driven novel and I’ve read it dozens of time just trying to figure out how she pulled it all together in the end.

My favorite book is Woken Furies by Richard K. Morgan. This book is the last in a trilogy about a ruthless killer who comes back to his home planet after hundreds of years of crime and soldiering and gets sucked back into local politics as he carries out a revenge agenda.

I love this book because it’s a deep character-driven novel disguised in an awesome twisty plot and filled with just about every science fiction element you can think of. This is a story about people more than anything, and lots of readers never got that about the book. I try to make my stories the same way in that they are always about the characters, not the action going on in the plot – even though there is a lot of action and a lot of twistiness in my books as well.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I have always thought about writing a book, but it wasn’t until I was in my thirties that I seriously thought about making it happen.

"I use the process described in Story Engineering..."

Tell us about your writing process. Do you have a writing routine?

WHAT IF YOU KILLED SOMEONE...ONLY DIDN’T KNOW IT?

After a long night of freebasing and binge drinking, Dave Bell, a washed-up track star turned high school volleyball coach, awakes to find the front bumper of his Volkswagen smashed in with scratches of red paint all along the passenger door panel. Rather than stopping to reflect on the situation, he hightails it to his dealer’s house and scores enough crack to kill a small elephant.

A couple drinks and a few hits later, Dave is “flying high” behind the wheel of a school bus packed with a bunch of hormone-raging teenagers. He doesn’t get very far before the State Troopers pull him over and arrest him for driving under the influence.

But the courts go easy on him. Thanks to some fancy footwork by his lawyer wife, Cheryl, Dave gets off with 90 days mandatory treatment at a secluded drug rehab high in the Rocky Mountains. There, he meets a young alcoholic named Monty, grieving over the death of his girlfriend who was killed in a hit-and-run only a week earlier.

As Monty shares intimate details of the accident that killed his girlfriend, memories begin to unfold of a crash Dave caused while blinded by crack and alcohol. As the details gel with increasing probability, Dave can’t help but wonder if he was the driver responsible.

“Andrew Seaward's first novel, Some Are Sicker Than Others, is an intense and emotional tale about the perils of addiction. His writing is colorful, penetrating and honest with a dose of macabre humor. This book is a white-knuckle thrill ride that I couldn't put down. I highly recommend this book to anyone. ” - Reader Review

New Indie Book Release:
Sunspots - Karen S. Bell -
Magical Realism / Paranormal Romance (December 12, 2012 - 223 pages)

“Sunspots is a moving, beautifully-written mystery about the devastating consequences of obsessive love.
Bell's elegant prose not only describes the events and scenery of this self destructive love story in riveting detail, but also skilfully evokes the atmosphere both internal and external. The structure of the story is very clever."
- Reader Review

About the Book

Sunspots (Karen S. Bell)
Click to Read an Excerpt
“One can never be, and should never be, smug about life,” says Aurora Goldberg. An aspiring New York actress who has never realized her dreams, Aurora keeps herself afloat by doing odd temp jobs where her rich fantasy life helps her get through the day. She sees the world through the lens of characters in literature and film and these fictionalizations are woven into her interpretation of reality. On one of her temp assignments she meets Jake Stein, a man who could “charm the skin off a snake” and she decides to follow her destiny as his wife in Austin, Texas. But Jake’s sudden death after two short years disintegrates her world and Aurora must reevaluate her life and let go of a love that has become an obsession.

Sunspots follows the healing journey of a young woman thrown into the horror of losing a spouse. It is a story of loss and redemption and the ghosts that haunt our lives and our houses. Skirting the genres of magical realism and romance, Sunspots, explores the existence of the afterlife and the paranormal. The story takes the reader on a path of high emotion as Aurora uncovers Jake’s secret life and her own internal conflicts as she matures to self-awareness. Narrated by Aurora, the novel’s tone vacillates from irreverent humor to solemnity as she relates her previous life with Jake and her present challenges. The title refers to the solar maximum which became the backdrop for Aurora’s conception when her hippy parents went to Canada to observe the Aurora Borealis. In name and in spirit, Aurora is connected to the observable and unobservable energy around us. With the help of friends, family, and the ghost of Viola Parker (her home’s original owner), Aurora accepts her fate and the secrets revealed about Jake’s true character. She realizes that in this life she will finally break the cycle of pain caused by her love for this man, Jake Stein, through the centuries.

“Sunspots was indeed a wonderful well written novel that was intriguingfrom the very beginning till the end. It was definitely "a story of loss, redemption and ghosts" that did haunt the life of Aurora Celeste Sunny Goldberg.... and yes I would recommend this read as a excellent read.” - Reader Review

S. Moo left Corporate America a few months after she told her beloved stepkids to “go out and play,” and they came back inside 5 minutes later, not knowing what to do. :(

Interview with S. Moo

Interview with S. Moo
Author S. Moo
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
S. Moo: I was a Communications Consultant for 10 years, winning over 20 awards for written campaigns that helped adults make positive health changes. I left Corporate America in 2009 to use my writing skills and campaign knowledge to give the gift of reading, relaxation, and play back to our kids (and us!) :-D
Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who or what are your writing influences?
Although I write children’s books, I am a huge fan of murder mysteries and action books. In terms of authors, I do not have a favorite. I am a fan of anyone willing to put his or her art in the hands of others! HOWEVER…I am currently a tad “obsessed” with Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" As a small woman, it is fabulous to imagine I am out there, stopping bad guys and taking names...heee. (Note: My obsession came WAY before the new Tom Cruise movie. I am not going to see it because I like the “Jack Reacher” I’ve created in my head!)

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I have loved to write since I was a small child. I was a Communications Major at Vanderbilt University where I learned all different ways to write. I then became a Communications Consultant, which brought many other forms of writing into my life. The day, however, I decided to write children’s book about animals was when I was spending time with one of the loves of my life, my cat “Mufasa.” He was by far one of the most interesting characters I’ve ever encountered. I looked at him that day and said, “Fas, someday I’m going to write books about you!” And so came to be “The Fassa Tails”!
Tell us about your writing process. Do you have a writing routine?
My characters are all animals I’ve loved throughout my life, and my books are based in the beautiful neighborhood I spent my childhood. Before I began writing my books, I spent weeks developing complete bios of each of the characters – down to their biggest fears, favorite music, and secret crushes. ;-) Because I wanted to introduce one character per book, I then outlined a storyline in which each book leads to the next, adding a new character, adventure, and valuable lesson per book. Once this was outlined, I just sat down and let my fingers do the walking.

"I absolutely enjoy storytelling [...]"

What do you find easiest about writing? What the hardest?
Quite honestly, the easiest thing about writing is that I simply love it, and always have. I absolutely enjoy storytelling, and writing is the way I get to capture my stories on paper, and share them with others.

The hardest thing is to let myself write things that I don't think are "perfect." I often try to write a story without errors the first time, so belabor over the words. This is not the way to write. One must just get the story out of your head. It is funny; once you learn that your first draft may look nothing like the final (after all the rewriting and editing is done), you really free yourself to create!

S. Moo, please tell us a little about your Book-Series 'Fassa Tails'.
The Fassa Tails are a line of kids’ books, where we follow Fassa as he uses his incredible imagination to make every situation an adventure, meet his new best friends, and learn positive lessons. A Conscious Void (Nathan Hassall)
Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Dark Poetry / Prose A Conscious Void by Nathan Hassall.

A Conscious Void: This collection targets anyone that is interested in poetry and is looking for a refreshing, modern approach to poetry, which defies more traditional poetic works. As it has a deep philosophical undercurrent, uses very surreal imagery and concepts. The book is aimed towards adults who relish a challenge when they read.

About the Book

Nathan Hassall's second book, A Conscious Void, is a brand new journey for both the writer and reader alike.

Leafing through the pages of prose, poetry, and occasional philosophy, we sail into work that has brought great challenges along the way; with heartfelt empathy and care, each piece has been tirelessly crafted to the smallest of details so that no meaning or message is ever lost. Godless space and time, the bitter-sweet Heaven of therapy, the undeniable hypocrisy of our most deeply held ideals; all is part of the extensive collage of questions and answers that appear in A Conscious Void.

With surrealism, humour and cold cynicism, Nathan Hassall has created a very modern approach to poetry and prose, and perhaps most importantly - in an age when our greatest thinkers fear that Philosophy is dead - an accessible but daringly unique way to keep our minds from a dull, technology-induced slumber.

Read between the lines, between the lines we draw in our minds and are too fearful to cross.

Author Julia Tagliere
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
Julia Tagliere: I am a freelance writer and editor and studied in the M.F.A. in Creative Writing Program at DePaul University. My work has appeared in The Writer and Hay & Forage Grower magazines and I am a featured author at Buzzle.com. I’m also an active blogger and past finalist in The Loft Literary Center’s Mentor Series Competition.

Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who or what are your writing influences?
If I had to choose one favorite writer, it’d be Neil Gaiman, hands-down—I love everything he writes. My favorite book is Good Omens. Outside of him, I cycle through other writers at will, either devouring their entire bodies of work (Clancy, Patchett, Tan, Rice, Brown, Leonard, Larsson, Crichton, Cornwall, King, Pilcher, Garcia Marquez) or picking them off one book at a time. I just finished Adam Johnson’s The Orphan Master’s Son and loved it. I like rich, complicated plots that slowly reel me in and once they’ve set the hook, never let me go.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I started young, writing my first poem at around age 11, but I didn’t truly contemplate embracing writing as a career until I left teaching for good. I was a high school Spanish and French teacher for a decade and left to raise my children; writing is what kept me sane during those early years. Well…relatively sane.

Why She Left Us - David Dennis -
Contemporary Romance (December 3, 2012 - 432 pages)

About the Book

Why She Left Us (David Dennis)
Click to Read an Excerpt

It was the summer of 1985, and she was young and inexperienced, but longing to love and to be loved in return, when he suddenly entered her life.
At the same time, while she was desperately seeking the love and approval of a mother who never wanted her in the first place, events totally beyond her control claimed her as their victim, leaving those she left behind unable to cope with the enormity of her absence.

Why She Left Us is written as a series of diary entries, the events seen through the eyes of several different people.
But at its center is a love story chronicling a romance that transforms the lives of two people who, for too brief a period of time, experienced the greatest happiness they had ever known.

“Because of the dramatic, even tragic events that occur in this novel, I feel that it reaches an unusually high level of emotional intensity. It also happens to contain something that can be loosely termed as a surprise ending.”

Author Interview w/ Lorraine Ash
Author Lorraine Ash
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
Lorraine Ash: Though I strongly specialize in nonfiction and creative nonfiction, I’m a cross-genre writer who believes that the demands of each—for example, dialogue in playwriting and economy of language in article writing—strengthen a writer in all. After earning my master’s degree in Public Communications at Fordham University thirty years ago, I embarked on a journalism career that’s still going. Currently, I’m a reporter at the Daily Record in New Jersey.

But I’ve had dual career tracks going almost the whole time. I’ve had two memoirs published as well as three plays and numerous essays and short stories in literary journals and anthologies.

Who are your favorite writers, and who or what are your writing influences?
Early on, the two writers who made me want to write were Ernest Hemingway and John Irving. I love the sparseness and precision of Hemingway’s prose and the transportive nature of Irving’s writings. They both paint such animated characters.
As a mature writer, my favorites expanded to encompass nonfiction writers and women writers who weave story with spiritual or psychological depth. In addition to the works of Pat Carr (my mentor), I love the writing of Anne Lamott, May Sarton, Frederick Buechner, Lisa Jones, Caroline Knapp, Gail Caldwell, Bernard Cooper, Kathleen Norris, William Styron, Lou Ureneck, and Sue William Silverman.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I knew when I was a very young girl. When I first walked into the public library in my hometown of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, and looked around at all the books, each one representing a new world, I distinctly remember thinking, When I grow up I’m going to write something that’ll be on those shelves.

"I catch inspiration whenever it comes and it’s always coming."

New Indie Book Release: Winter's End (Rebekah Lyn)

New Indie Book Release:
Winter's End (Season's of Faith) - Rebekah Lyn -
Contemporary Christian Fiction (November 27, 2012 - 332 pages)

“This is a great book. I couldn't figure out how these characters could be tied together. Rebekah Lyn did an awesome job. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next with each character. I really enjoy how she has combined Gods word in her books. Mystery, sweet romance and trust in God all wrapped up in one amazing read." - Reader Review

About the Book

Winter's End (Rebekah Lyn)

Musician Michelle Burton just had the best night of her life. Her band Tangled Web opened for Wonderland in downtown Orlando and the crowd loved them. Too excited to sleep she makes a fateful decision to go to work early. The best night of her life turns into the worst day of her life.

Nearby, at boutique Hotel Lago, Stephen Longbottom, acting concierge manager, is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the board of directors for Silken Pleasures, a multimillion dollar company based in New York and specializing in high end cosmetics, fragrances and lingerie. Their incessant demands before they even arrive are driving him to distraction. Meanwhile Lizzie Reynolds, his boss is on a romantic ski trip in Vermont leaving him to manage his first solo event.

Hope, forgiveness and love are an integral message throughout the book and like a fine tapestry the threads of God's master plan for the character's lives are woven into a fabric of great storytelling, conflict and humor.

Readers who came to know and love the characters of Summer Storms will enjoy catching up with Lizzie, Stephen, Michelle, Jeffrey and Ian.

“Rebekah Lyn has an honest way of sharing life's ups and downs in her books, with a plot twist now and again to keep you interested. As in the past, the author has not forgotten to write in a reminder of God's grace and provision for the problems of life. Which Winter's End character is struggling with forgiving themselves for a conflicted past-Lizzie, Ian, Jeffrey or maybe Michelle? Will happiness be found in the future or will the cold of winter linger on with opportunities missed? I thoroughly recommend Winter's End as an enjoyable stand-alone novel, even if you haven't had the chance to read Summer Storms.” - Reader Review

Indie Author Interview: Richard I Levine

Interview with Richard I Levine - Author of the Action/Adventure/Romance Eye Of The Redeemer..

Richard I Levine is a native New Yorker who grew up in the shadows of Yankee Stadium. "I fondly remember the days of sneaking into the Stadium through the bleacher seat entrance to watch Maris and Mantle play, sipping egg cream sodas at the corner candy store and playing sidewalk games until mom called out from our fourth floor apartment window that dinner was getting cold."

After working in the auto parts business for several years and a one year wanderlust trip that took him coast to coast and back again, this one time volunteer firemen, auxiliary police officer and bartender eventually returned to school to become a chiropractor.

Interview with Richard I Levine

Interview w/ Richard I Levine
Author Richard I Levine
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
Richard I Levine: None really. When I was in high school and college I took some creative writing courses and played around with writing poetry and song lyrics but I never took myself seriously. When I wrote Eye of the Redeemer I had never intended it to become a novel. It started as a simple way to entertain myself because I had become bored to death of television. It wasn’t until the characters started coming to life and a coherent storyline began to develop that I decided to continue on. At no time, however, was I writing with the thought of having it published. But once I had the finished product I said, why not?

Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who and what are your writing influences?
I’m a history buff and I like biographical accounts but historical fiction is great too. I recently read Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken which chronicled the true ordeal of American Olympian Louis Zamparini and what he went through surviving for weeks in a raft after his plane crashed into the Pacific and then as a prisoner of the Japanese during the second world war. My all time favorite book is a science fiction tale called Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. I first read it when I was a teenager and I think I read it a dozen times since then. Being an introvert , I was intrigued by the events and challenges that the protagonist, Isherwood Williams, had to face in a world in which almost all of the population had succumbed to some sort of virus. Back in the 80s I read a lot of Joseph Wambaugh and Stephen King. I also like W.E.B. Griffin. The Genres are different but the writing styles of each of those authors easily captured my attention. I often felt as if they had written specifically for me.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
Ever since I was a kid I had always been writing something at one time or another. Because of a lack of discipline, focus, intent, whatever… I can come up with a number of excuses as to why I never saw a project thru to completion, I never took my writing to that next level. Perhaps it was out of a fear of being judged. But when I finished Eye of the Redeemer, just knowing that I wrote it for me, I really didn’t care if someone liked it or not. Don’t get me wrong, praise is a wonderful thing. It gets the endorphins flowing just like a good piece of dark chocolate. And having the book be a finalist in the 2012 Indie Reader Discovery Awards Competition was an unexpected surprise that had me on cloud nine for quite a while.

"[...] it had evolved over the entire process that the finished product was very different."

New Indie Book Release: No Greater Illusion (K. Baskett)

New Indie Book Release:
No Greater Illusion - K. Baskett -
Dystopian Fiction (November 30, 2012 - 318 pages)

“Gripping, dark and compelling; ‘No Greater Illusion’ paints a stunningly bold picture of dystopian America. Set in the future yet frighteningly realistic – K. Baskett’s debut novel is set for true literary success."

About the Book

No Greater Illusion - K. Baskett

In the very near future, surging advancements in technology have afforded American citizens with a number of conveniences. Of these, most notable is the SmartTag, a microchip embedded under the skin between index finger and thumb, housing all manner of personal information such as bank account details, medical history, voter registration and more.

This tightly-woven tale follows the lives of several very different people – Tealia, a free-spirited and intelligent photographer battling with conflicting emotions for her ex-lover; Mercer & Viera Scott, a power couple barely holding on to their marriage as the priorities of success and parenthood slowly become skewed between them; impoverished single mother, Naria, content with her reliance on both her current lover and government assistance to make ends meet; and the Holton family, wealthy beyond measure, enjoying carefree days of privilege and luxury.

Their status quo, however, is about to be undermined as America reacts violently to the brutal assassination of a highly esteemed female presidential nominee on the evening of the debates. As the entire nation struggles to make sense of the ensuing chaos, fear and distrust ramp up to dizzying heights. The end result is a series of grave consequences that will drastically alter life as they know it, making them all wonder how much of their world is but an illusion.

A captivating story that is at once gripping and dark, this brilliantly painted picture of a dystopian America cautions against the power of technology and the folly of taking anything for granted. Haunting and lyrical, No Greater Illusion is an astounding debut novel with a powerful message that lingers long after the final page is read.

“The author is very descriptive and paints vivid images eloquently that place you in the midst of the turmoil. A thought provoking novel that gives you pause, what if the final outcome were to happen, under any circumstances... Once you start reading this book it's hard to put down. Truly enjoyable reading. ” - Reader Review

New Indie Book Release: Grave Digger Blues (Jesse Sublett)

New Indie Book Release:
Grave Digger Blues - Jesse Sublett -
Crime Fiction - set in the near future (November 19, 2012 - 52,000 words plus Bonus Material - more than 100 photos, drawings, and collages)

“Grave Digger Blues is a dark fever dream that’s part noir, part stand-up. Sublett’s writing is as apt to scare the hell out of you as it is to make you die laughing." - Reed Farrel Coleman, three-time Shamus Award-winning author of Gun Church

About the Book

Greave Digger Blues (Jesse Sublett)
Click to Read an Excerpt
Grave Digger Blues is a blast of surreal, post-apocalyptic noir, set during the last weeks of the world. Dual protagonists drive the narrative--The Blues Cat, an itinerant, doomed jazz musician, and Hank Zzybnx, a private detective and damaged war veteran.

It's a dangerous and strange world, shot through with bizarre beauty and dreamlike weirdness. Grizzly bears and alligators have invaded the cities, walking catfish prowl the exurbs, and the best bar in town was formerly the city Morgue.

A right wing rebellion has wrecked the infrastructure of US, and the planet is wracked by daily earthquakes, bizarre weather and mutated species. Old politicians litter the bars and circuses. Dick Cheney is a drag queen... Newt Gingrich is a security guard at WalMart.

During these hard times, the only profitable work left for a private eye is murder for hire. Hank is exclusive about his clients and only accepts contracts on people who are truly despicable menaces to society. Fortunately, as he puts it, “There’s always some scummy sonofabitch out there who needs killing and somebody willing to pay for it.”

Despite being a hired killer, in this bleak nightmare world, Hank is a sympathetic character, even a poetic figure. He’s haunted by the benevolent ghost of Marilyn Monroe, fragmented memories of the war in Murderstan, and a grifter mother who hated him before he was born.

The Blues Cat is a lady’s man, but constantly being attacked or hounded by disgruntled husbands and neurotic groupies. His body is a road map of scars from the innumerable attempts on his life. He’s followed across the country, from one dive to the next, by a 300 pound thug called The Muffin Man.

“Grave Digger Blues is a nasty, raunchy, rude-boy romp that I totally loved. In its sinister way it is very, very funny. The exquisitely rendered visuals and other enhancements are great. You’ll love it, especially if you hate the Beatles.” - W.K. Stratton (Chasing the Rodeo, Boxing Shadows, Floyd Patterson: The Fighting Live of Boxing’s Invisible Champ)

Indie Author Interview: Terry Tracy

Interview with Terry Tracy - Author of the Literary Fiction A Great Place for a Seizure..

Terry Tracy was born in Virginia, but moved around Latin America in her childhood as a military brat. After college Terry worked as a receptionist, then left to work for free in Honduras at an orphanage. She returned to work in a human rights organization in Washington DC, then left for Guatemala to work as a free-lance journalist. By this point, it was clear that she had developed an addiction to moving around. Nevertheless, in denial, she jumped over the Atlantic to Cambridge, England to get a Masters in a completely irrelevant, but intriguing, subject matter about 16th century judicial sytem in the Spanish colonies.

Upon her return she decided to join the establishment and started working for the US Government. She left her job at the State Department in 2007 to take turns with her husband and become a stay-at-home parent in London.

Terry has had epilepsy for 30 years and with the extra time at home decided to write a funny, sad, strange, and moving novel about a sarcastic epileptic. Terry is Asian-Irish American with a German husband and a German-American daughter (who tries desperately to teach her mother German). They currently live in London.

Interview with Terry Tracy

Interview w/ Indie Author Terry Tracy
Author Terry Tracy
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
Terry Tracy: Essentially it has been non-fiction in terms of news articles, human rights reports, diplomatic cables and my thesis on the obscure topic of 16th century indigenous litigation in New Spain. But somehow, by leaving Washington DC and coming to England it's as if this creative writing student from decades ago was released. Reading a lot of fiction for the first time in my life brought be realize the bliss in writing, not just the satisfaction of transmitting information accurately, but the joy of creating your own universe on paper and inviting people in to come in.

Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who or what are your writing influences?
My favorite writer of fiction is Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird) and of non-fiction, Marcus Aurelius (Meditations) and David Sedaris (The Santaland Diaries). I know they make an odd combination; an American woman from the Deep South and a Roman Emperor but there is an essential honesty, simplicity, and wisdom in their writing that appeals to me. Harper Lee created her childhood world and through innocent eyes of Scout transmitted these deep experiences of racism in the south, incest and poverty, and disability (through the character of Boo Radley). She created an atmosphere where you soaked up the feelings, the smells, the touch of the time. I remember her opening chapter when she describes the heat of her region by observing that by evening southern ladies' were like frosted teacakes from the sweat and talcum powder.

I like Marcus Aurelius for his kind wisdom. My favorite quote about not whining in life is: "Is your cucumber bitter? Then throw it away."

I like David Sedaris for his wry celebration of absurdity in life. He can talk about tragic situations and see the hilarious side of it. It entertains but he also shows the value of humor as a lifeboat.

They are my greatest influences and I hope that I combine them well enough in my novel: A Great Place for a Seizure.

"Whatever I do, I have to write."

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
In 1994 when my contract was up at the human rights NGO where I was working. Someone asked me what I wanted to do in life and I replied, "Whatever I do, I have to write."

Tell us about your writing process. Do you have a writing routine?
I write between 11:30 and 2am.

What do you find easiest about writing? What the hardest?

Indie Author Interview: Marina Martindale

Interview with Marina Martindale - Author of the Contemporary Romance The Reunion.

Marina Martindale is a graphic designer and artist turned novelist and writer whose only regret in life is that she didn't start writing books twenty years sooner.

After writing a series of award-winning children's books, (under a different name), Marina wanted to write the kind of books she wanted to write--contemporary romance with believable, three-dimensional characters, inspired by some of her own life experiences, and stories others have told her.

Interview with Marina Martindale

Interview with Author Marina Martindale
Author Marina Martindale
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): What is your (writing) background?
Marina Martindale: My only formal training was high school and college English. I got an "easy A" in the dreaded college freshman English, and I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. Later on, I thought about getting my degree in English. In hindsight, I wish I had.

Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who or what are your writing influences?
As a young adult I read Danielle Steele voraciously. I'm sure her writing style has influenced me.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
When I was a child. Then my "logical" mind kicked in, and I thought it was just a silly pipe dream. It wasn't until much later in life that I actually started writing. Sometimes I wish I'd started sooner. Then again, you have to go out and experience life before you can write about it.

Tell us about your writing process. Do you have a writing routine?
I write a treatment before I start, but it's mostly the beginning and end of the story. I write the rest as I go, and as I do my characters come forward and tell me their stories.

"...I step back and let my characters tell their story."

What do you find easiest about writing? What the hardest?
