Featured Indie Book: The Republic of Jack (Jeffrey Kerr)

The Republic of Jack (Jeffrey Kerr)

Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Literary Fiction / Political Satire The Republic of Jack by Jeffrey Kerr.

The Republic of Jack has a great premise (Texas becomes an independent country). "You know, Dr. Kerr, Texas has the constitutional right to secede."
It's funny and it provides insight into the absurdity of today's politics.

The Book has been self-published via Amazon and is available as eBook and Paperback - 249 pages - released in April 2020.

About the Book

Jack Cowherd will do anything to win the Texas governorship, even flirt with 21st century secessionists in the Texas Patriot Party. Victory is achieved, but only at the cost of Texas being tossed out of the United States. The Republic of Texas lives again! And Jack is president.

Friend and political advisor Tasha Longoria has long warned Jack of the dangers of his demagoguery. Now when he tries to halt the madness, the worst comes to pass: he is impeached, arrested, and charged with treason, the penalty for which is death.

Jack has but one chance to save his beloved Texas, not to mention his life. But success depends upon help from the one person least likely to give it . . . Tasha.

Reviews (Excerpts)

- "[...] The action and dialogue move at a fast pace and I found myself laughing out loud more than just a few times. In my opinion, if you like Mel Brooks comedies, you’ll like the hilarious, and sometimes ribald, comedy. Kerr pulls no punches and goes where the story will inevitably go. [...]" - WGirl (Amazon)

- "This page-turner of a novel is set in Austin, mostly around the doings of the Texas Legislature. Readers who know Texas will find many of its fictional characters to be cut from easily recognizable cloth. This underscores the author’s deep understanding of both the city and of the powerful political leaders who populate the corridors of the Capitol Building. Written in the finest traditions of Billy Lee Brammer [...]" - Arthur Webber

- "Jeff Kerr loves Texas! He has had a knack of making the stories of Texas history come alive. This novel begs the question of which is most outlandish, fact or fiction? His honor and satire are on full speed ahead and the pages keep turning as you keep one eye on Twitter feed. A fun read. Thank you, Jeff.[...]" - Kent Bohls

- "With colorful, witty characters and an exciting storyline, this book entertains and peaks concerns as well: just how stunning a catastrophe can politics get us into? I highly recommend Republic of Jack!" - Puppy Pool (Amazon)

Featured Indie Book: Arnold Falls (Charlie Suisman)

Arnold Falls (Charlie Suisman)

Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Literary Fiction Novel Arnold Falls by Charlie Suisman.

Arnold Falls is a humorous story of a small upstate New York town that does a lot of things wrong but gets one crucial thing right: everyone's welcome.

The Book has been self-published via Amazon and is available as eBook and Paperback - 276 pages - released in March 2020.

About the Book

Spend time in the funny, oddball village of Arnold Falls, where larger-than-life characters deal with the smallest of problems. Somehow, it all comes out right in the end.

Given the choice of go big or go home, nine times out of ten the townspeople of Arnold Falls will go home, get back into their house slippers, and forget about the whole thing, whatever the whole thing was this time. Tempests great and small (mostly small) are always brewing in this tiny, upstate hamlet where half of the residents are fighting to preserve Arnold Falls as it was in its red-light-district heyday, half are up to no good, and another half are sleeping it off. And that math is correct.

Jeebie Walker moved north out of the city hoping to find a house with his then-boyfriend and a quieter life. He found the house but lost the boyfriend, and is still searching for the elusive tranquility. Just now, he's helping a pal become the first female mayor of Arnold Falls; he's fighting against a plan to build a noxious tire factory by the river; and he's working to save Chaplin, a beloved turkey, from Thanksgiving.

What he's not doing, in no uncertain terms, is looking for love. Not even with the handsome orchard worker-slash-volunteer fireman-slash-cartoon artist who has an eye for him. And yet, hapless though it may be, Arnold Falls will have its way when it comes to love. First, Jeebie and the town's unruly cast of characters, (which includes the 93-year-old daughter of a bordello madam, a theatrical agent/recidivist pickpocket, a doltish mayor, a social worker who sings like a dream, and a television chef who does not take kindly to prune clafoutis sabotage) will have to wage epically tiny battles to restore the disorder that makes perfect sense in Arnold Falls.

Arnold Falls is a novel that tips its hat to Armistead Maupin and P.G. Wodehouse, creating a world in which food, music, friendship, love, and tending your own garden are connected in surprising ways.

Reviews (Excerpts)

- "Hilarious and poignant...Suisman's comedic novel will charm readers with its endearingly eccentric characters and its slice-of-life portrait of a disreputable corner of New York State...A charming, funny novel." - BookLife

- "A masterful book, so full of intelligence, humor, and truth. Everything about it seems effortlessly sure-footed. The large cast of characters all speak with such clarity. It’s plot is perfectly paced. It manages at once to be folksy and sophisticated. But more than that, it’s a vivid portrait of what many of us today aspire for." - Someone Somewhere (Amazon)

- "I smiled throughout. I loved it! Many laugh out loud moments. Truly memorable characters and Arnold Falls will stay with you long after the last page." - Joy McLean

- "[...] with such characters that the reader can also, upon quiet reflection, perhaps learn a small life lesson or two to apply to his or her own life and town. I highly recommend this heartwarming book and hope the author writes more about Arnold Falls and it’s very lovable and very human townspeople." - Amazon Review

Click to Read an Excerpt
Grace is a bartender, lives alone in a cramped apartment in the big city, a young woman who gets hit on often and has dated her share of losers. She grew up in public housing, dropped out of high school, and ran around with a meth-addicted boyfriend who hurt her. After juvenile detention and women’s prison failed to reform her, she committed a felony for which she’s not been busted. She swears it’s her last crime. Early thirties, she needs to pull it together, find an ordinary guy with a decent job and a sense of humor. Then the husband of a billionaire walks into her bar. He offers her an outrageous sum to work a gala, a cancer fundraiser, at his mansion. She takes the gig for the cash, but assumes this peculiar man has ulterior motives. She’s right. His crazy proposition blows her mind and changes her life forever.

Abel, called Abe, splits time between home, the cemetery, and the hospital where his eight-year-old daughter, Annabel, lost her fight with cancer. Abe grew up dirt poor raised by cruel grandparents after Mom hung herself in the barn and Dad ran off. Abe overcame his rough start in life with stones and brains to become a hotshot attorney with a beautiful young wife and a cherished daughter. Scarred by his youth, Abe couldn’t selflessly love anyone until his child was born. He became a terrific father. When his wife, Annabel’s mother, abandoned them Abe and Annabel became all each other had in the world. Then Annabel was diagnosed with leukemia, underwent treatment, entered remission, relapsed, and died a few months before her ninth birthday. Abe fell apart. He quit his job, began boozing heavily, and in his huge dark empty house contemplated suicide.

Abe’s deep depression is dragging him toward madness when Grace enters his life. It is not chance or fate that brings them together. And Grace hasn’t come bearing goodwill. The immediate chemistry between them complicates matters significantly. The story is a tragicomedy played out by memorable characters. New Indie Book Release:
Perpetuating Trouble - Chris Orcutt
Memoir / Humor (239 Pages - October 2017)

Perpetuating Trouble is an honest portrayal of the life of a full-time independent author. While others attempt to sell their success stories of fame and fortune, Orcutt chronicles the realities one writer's life away from the writing desk.

"[...] Orcutt is a tortured perfectionist who sees satisfaction as a form of surrender. Perpetuating Trouble is a testament to his torment and to his legitimacy as a Master Craftsman." - Reader Review

About the Book

Perpetuating Trouble (Chris Orcutt)
Click to Read an Excerpt
"I avoided writers very carefully because they can perpetuate trouble as no one else can," wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald. In his humorous memoir Perpetuating Trouble, independent author Chris Orcutt debunks the myth that full-time writers are "livin' the dream." Orcutt reveals that the writing life is really one of crushing solitude, chronic dissatisfaction, mood swings and self-doubt, and where successes, when the come, are like diner mints--sweet, but short-lived.

Yet, Orcutt's deep love of language, his saintly wife, and his indomitable sense of humor keep him going. Whether picking up two female hitchhikers who later turn out to be aliens from another planet, or divesting himself of a hoard of tacky paintings, or using philosophy to get out of a traffic ticket, Orcutt finds the humor and the art in his trials. It's also a life of love and sadness, as he recounts a whirlwind love affair with a ravishing redhead, and the death of his beloved writing companion, his cat.

In the end, Orcutt discovers that to be a writer, he must be part adventurer, crusader, humorist, lover, philosopher, and, of course, troublemaker.

The Ronald And Other Plays features a full-length dramatic work of political satire and five one-act plays.

About the Book

The Ronald And Other Plays (Chris Orcutt)
Click to Read an Excerpt
"Fabulously Caucasian" billionaire The Ronald decides to run for President of the Incorporated States of Freedomland. Aiding him in his quest are his sexy genius daughter, his accountant, a conservative professor, a Broadway producer, his idiot sons, a TV entertainment reporter, a pizza delivery-boy, and the Cork Brothers--a pair of 1,000-year-old vampires.

The play presents a behind-the-scenes look at a calculating narcissist's Presidential campaign, from his decision to run, to the months leading up to the election, to the day before he takes office.

Also in the collection are five original short plays.

The Clean-Shaven Secretary with the Pistol: What happens when a theatre company attempts to stage a short period drama, and the producers decide, without warning, to insert a commercial break?

Dark and Stormy Night: An autumn night, a desolate diner, and a lonely, beautiful waitress. Enter a man dressed like an L.L. Bean model and carrying a splitting maul. Is he a murderer or her romantic salvation?

Front Page Above the Fold: At a local city daily newspaper, competition between reporters for the front page story is fierce. So fierce, it's personal.

Microbrew: Two 20-something slackers live above grandma June, but they aren't getting anything past her. What she isn't prepared for, however, is her grandson's bewitching homemade beer.

Kansas City This is Former Air Force One: August 9, 1974--the day President Richard Nixon resigned his office. Oh, to be a fly on the wall during his flight home! But wait...in this play, you are.

* All of the plays in this collection, including the political satire The Ronald, may be performed royalty-free by amateur theater companies (high schools, colleges and community theater groups).

Worse, he has to keep his sexual predilections under wraps if he hopes to run the state instead of having the press run him.

He is an expert at keeping his private affairs private from his adoring movie fans.

What he doesn’t expect is for Sacramento to be even more of a hotbed of lust, lies, jealousy, and revenge than the film industry.

And he certainly doesn’t expect to catch the eye of Miles James.

As a teacher, I'm used to being on the playground. But I never thought I'd be the one swinging.

I'm also a wife and mother, always trying to keep everyone happy. My sons just left for college, forcing me to see how far apart my husband and I have grown. I feel like a damn cliché.

Then the teacher down the hall with questionable morals introduces me to her friends. They're swingers.

What the what?!

It's all fun and games until your sex swing breaks. Haha, no really, so far it seems like all fun and games. It could be the answer to what’s missing in my life...or maybe I’m just not asking the right questions?

Featured Indie Book: Not to Mention a Nice Life (Sean Murphy)

Not to Mention a Nice Life (Sean Murphy)
Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Literary Fiction / Satire Novel Not to Mention a Nice Life by Sean Murphy.

Not to Mention a Nice Life examines corporate America during the not-so-quiet storm that preceded the historic economic meltdown of 2008. This book recounts the arena of big deals and small souls during the days before and after the bursting of the dot.com bubble.

The Book has been self-published via Bright Moments Books and is available as eBook and Paperback - 272 pages - released in June 2015.

About the Book

Byron is a poet. And he knows it. The problem is, he's unable to make art out of the mess he has made of his life.

The more Byron drinks, the more money he makes. If he can keep up this pace, he might enable his embattled company to stay in the black. Maybe if he doubles down, all those stock options will split, reconcile and multiply. This is his story and he's stuck to it.

Byron is a real piece of work in progress: old enough to own his own condo and pay all his bills most of the time; young enough to be unmarried but understand he is not getting any younger. Byron would love to mix things up and instigate some excitement into his own humble narrative. Unfortunately, a fight scene is not feasible, a car chase is getting too carried away, and a love interest appears to be out of the question. Also, he has to be awake and ready to work in the morning, just like everyone else.

Not to Mention a Nice Life (Sean Murphy)
Click to Read an Excerpt

A recovering bartender, Byron struggled to escape the self-destructive restaurant business, but finds that the drinking and drugging of the corporate world are more pervasive--and encouraged--than he could ever have imagined. He finds himself unprepared for life after thirty, and ambivalent about the semi-fortune his stock options might eventually yield. Then, when a rumor circulates that a devastating round of layoffs is scheduled to occur just before Christmas, Byron begins to envision where he'll be when something approximating reality comes crashing down.

Not to Mention a Nice Life examines corporate America during the not-so-quiet storm that preceded the historic economic meltdown of 2008. A literary expansion on "Office Space," this novel provides an answer to a question not enough people have asked: What happened to Holden Caulfield when he grew up? He got a job.

Reviews (Excerpts)

- "The craziness of corporate America in the dot.com bubble is about to burst and Sean Murphy takes us to the wackiness of F5, the epicenter largeness, as the rumble of the fall stirs among his colleagues. This book is a light and refreshing look at what life is like when it is not what you expected it to be and the angst involved in trying to figure out where you really want life to take you.[...]" - J. Fitzpatrick

- "This book had me hooked in the first paragraph. Murphy has a knack for putting things in the ultimate perspective and wraps you in to Byron's world immediately. This book put me right back in the dot com bubble and was able to retrieve all the great and not so great memories I had while being a part of it. This is a well crafted novel and I highly recommend it to anyone wants to lose themselves in the not too distant past and add some perspective to the present. Well done!" - dcfergs (Amazon)

It really hits its stride about 1/3 of the way through and keeps your attention until the very end. I found myself staying up late each night simply because I couldn't put it down. I was sincerely impressed that this was the author's first novel [...]" - Shawn Gogia

Imagine living on a remote island, only accessible by boat or floatplane. What if you were stuck on that island with a killer at large, amongst a horde of outrageously loony inhabitants?

Jim Wekle’s first day as a trooper on an island in Alaska could have gone better. It was raining, the coffee was bad, and within hours of stepping off the floatplane, he finds a bikini-clad girl floating in a kelp bed. As Jim investigates who might have put the bullet in her back, he stumbles across a uniquely diverse and extraordinarily hilarious batch of island inhabitants. Puffing on his imported cigars, Jim soon learns that no one on the island is more unique, diverse, or hilarious than his unlikely counterpart; a man simply known as Kram.

About the Book

How I Live My Life and Let Other People Live Theirs (Mary Sisney)
Click to Read an Excerpt
The Bronze Rule offers a corollary to the Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you).

This new rule says, "If they are not bothering you, don't bother them."

In other words, mind your business. The author describes three types of people based on their ability to follow the Bronze Rule -- teachers, social workers, and missionaries. Missionaries have the most trouble following the Bronze Rule.

The book includes eleven Bronze Rules for people to live by so that they won't bother the author, and she, therefore, won't have to bother them. It ends with a list of both serious ("Smarten the Vote Rules") and comic ("Putting the 'Real' in Reality Rules") Bronze Rules for all of us to live by so that we can stop bothering each other and live happily ever after.
