Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Political Fiction A Life as a Stock by C. M. Fields.

A Life as a Stock is a novel set not long from now. It imagines a world where globalization is going at a faster pace and yet there is still a lot of ground to cover. There are two parallel stories: the first, the ups and down of an entrepreneur's life, who has a dream to use the new globalization trends to make a difference in the communities and to balance profit with social responsibility. The second story is that of a reporter who explains in a very succinct and clear way the workings of this heavily interconnected world. These two interwoven stories explore, along with visualizing our world in the near future, new technologies and cultural trends, which, in the end, offer a new perspective on mixing profit seeking with social responsibility.

The Book has been self-published via iUniverse and is available as eBook and Paperback – 211 pages - released in September 2011.

About the Book

In a tale that captures both the realities of an ever increasing globally integrated economy and the instability of financial markets author C.M. Fields provides insight into what our future may look like 20 to 30 years. The novel A Life as a Stock
follows college student Rick McMahon on his quest to produce a model of social entrepreneurship which would allow those living in developing countries an opportunity to prosper financially, while at the same time uplifting their communities.

In many ways, A Life as a Stock is metaphorical in that it follows the financial ups and downs of Rick’s life after he become a globally traded commodity through the GeoOne trading system (a system which integrates standing global markets while at the same time creating a venue to speculatively invest in human talent and potential). Rick is tossed around, traded, chewed up, and spit out as his life undergoes the opera of human triumph and tragedy – a reality only exacerbated by the fact that his life has now become someone else’s investment.

Author C.M Fields delivers an interesting look at the not so distant future and the scenarios that we might expect to see play out if we continue along our current trends. While following Rick’s tumultuous journey, Fields take the time to explore the types of technologies that we might expect to see in the next few decades and how those technologies might further bridge the gaps of the global divide.

A Life as a Stock is a great read largely because of Fields’ ability to successfully traverse current trends in order to produce a plausible future reality. The story flows fast and it contains somewhat of a moral cautionary note as the reader watches Rick struggle. If we draw parallels between today’s world and Rick’s story we see that as financial success continues to serve as marker of individual achievement we have to take great care to interject humanity into the system or otherwise our lives do essentially become commodities on a stock market. Fields creates a morally ambiguous future… in other words, Fields leaves the values and realities of the future free of moral judgment instead showing the both ends of the spectrum of opportunity. A Life as a Stockoffers a relevant and captivating glimpse into an imagined future offering the reader the chance to explore innovative perspectives.

About the Author

Author C. M. Fields
In his younger years, C. M. Fields had passion for technology. He was a true techie. He had the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures, or “different realities” as he likes to say. Both prior to his coming to America and after. Each of these trips left him with new learnings and observations; He never returned the same, something always came back with him. He was always sensitive to the disadvantages many suffer throughout our world and, over the years, this feeling has only grown. This was one of the main drivers for writing his first novel. He firmly believes that all people have a great potential and that, while everyone ultimately is responsible for their own lives, some are born into better opportunities than others. Some folks only need a small helping hand.

He has been working for a Fortune 50 company for over 12 years and does his best to stay abreast of the newest, baddest, most cutting edge technologies and things related. He also reads a lot about politics, economic issues, and world trends, trying to keep an open mind and try to see what’s going on in the world. Some of his favorite sites are The New York Times, The Economist, The Huffington Post, Harvard Business Review, Inc., 30 Second MBA and a few others. He loves languages and, as you might have guessed, interacting with folks from other cultures, it gets him pumped. He fluently speak Spanish and Portuguese and feeds articles that are interesting to him to his Twitter and Facebook page.
