Passing Thoughts... is a collection poetry illustrating the life of military veteran, writer, and artist Tom Balderrama. Though written by a formally educated English major, the poems splattered across the pages of this book, while sometimes complex and always thought-provoking, are not always bound by any particular style or formal structure. They are at times painfully tragic, desperate, and full of despair, while at others triumphant, defiant, and profoundly inspiring of hope.

Interspersed with powerful, poignant, and thematically relevant sketches and photos by the author, this book seeks to “educate you in your own emotional landscape,” make you “ponder your own humanity in all its frailty, humility, tragedy, and triumph,” and “illustrate to you both how to be human, and what the consequences are of being inhuman.” Follow the author on his journey through alcoholism, the loss of two sisters and a brother-in-arms, and the struggle to persevere even when all hope has been lost. It is a remarkable journey of experiences conveyed in words that is impossible to emerge from completely unscathed and untouched.
