Featured Indie Book: Hot Dogs Under The Dakota (Johannes Gouws)

Featured Indie Book on Indie Author News: Hot Dogs Under The Dakota by Johannes Gouws. Hot Dogs Under The Dakota is a Literary Fiction (494 pages - June 2011), self-published via Amazon KDP Select, CreateSpace, and Smashwords.

Book Description

Will a spirited boy trapped in an abusive environment resort to murder?

Told through the eyes of twelve year old Petie, the story moves to twelve months earlier where we find Petie (once again) abandoned by his wayward mother on his grandparents’ doorstep.

Resourceful, stubborn, and bright, Petie has his day and night times neatly partitioned, and confides in Rob, his imaginary friend, but we soon glimpse dark forces at play as his need for a father figure clashes with Granddad’s clandestine visits to his room. The reader shares this inner turmoil as the boy launches into desperate plots from match-making for his mother to the lure of African witchcraft and the promise of Born Again Christians to escape his torment. Only when his growing rage is channeled into boxing and his self-worth grows does Petie begin to understand that his options are limited and his thoughts turn to murder.

Set against the background of emerging Apartheid with its vicious consequences, this character driven story explores the depths and complexity of the human condition to culminate in a terrible but surprising climax.

About the Author

Johannes Gouws: "I have found self publication an exciting experience, with wonderful support from the people at CreateSpace who helped me realize my dream."
