How to Use Kickstarter to Fund Your Book Project

Kickstarter - Crowd-Funding

There is a great way to gain exposure and help fund your book projects! Kickstarter is a crowd funding (micro-funding) site that is set up for new entrepreneurs, writers, film makers, artists, musicians, publishing platforms, etc... to get funding in the form of pledges so that you can launch your book project or other projects!

Kickstarter Indie Book Project

Seeley James on Indie Author News
Indie Author Seeley James has set up a Kickstarter Project for the independently release of the first Pia Sabel Novel and he is turning to the Kickstarter community to ensure that this series has high production values.

Backing this project will guarantee a final book with finished product quality (editing, design, cover art, and marketing) that will rival that of a traditional publisher.

The Editorial Department, a firm serving the literary community for over thirty years, has already provided some valuable services.

About the Book Project

In the book, The Geneva Decision, Pia Sabel takes the helm of Sabel Security only to see her client murdered and an attempt made on her life—on her first day. Her professional soccer career taught her agility and endurance. Her amateur boxing career taught her how to duck. She knows how to handle a gun. Now all she has to do is figure out how to track down a modern pirate ring and expose a money laundering conspiracy before her employees resign en masse. From Geneva’s Jet d’Eau to the jungles of Cameroon and the streets of Vienna, Pia Sabel and her team take on high society and low-life criminals alike.

How does Kickstarter work?

What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a new way to fund creative projects.

• A good idea, communicated well, can spread fast and wide.

• A large group of people can be a tremendous source of money and encouragement.

Kickstarter is powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands.

Who can fund their project on Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is focused on creative projects. We're a great way for artists, filmmakers, musicians, designers, writers, illustrators, explorers, curators, performers, and others to bring their projects, events, and dreams to life.

All-or-nothing funding?
Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires or no money changes hands.
Why?
1. It's less risk for everyone. If you need $5,000, it's tough having $2,000 and a bunch of people expecting you to complete a $5,000 project.
2. It allows people to test concepts (or conditionally sell stuff) without risk. If you don't receive the support you want, you're not compelled to follow through. This is huge!
3. It motivates. If people want to see a project come to life, they're going to spread the word.

Why do people support projects?
REWARDS! Project creators inspire people to open their wallets by offering smart, fun, and tangible rewards (products, benefits, and experiences).
STORIES! Kickstarter projects are efforts by real people to do something they love, something fun, or at least something of note. These stories unfold through blog posts, pics, and videos as people bring their ideas to life. Take a peek around the site and see what we're talking about. Stories abound.

I only need to raise a small amount of funding. Is Kickstarter for me?
Absolutely! Kickstarter is for creative projects big and small, serious and whimsical, traditional and experimental. Small projects that you (or you and a few friends) can do over a weekend are perfect for Kickstarter. In fact, the most common projects on Kickstarter are not blockbusters but smaller projects that raise $5,000 or less. Check out some fun project stats and some currently funding Small Projects looking to raise $1,000 or less.

What fees does Kickstarter charge?
If a project is successfully funded, Kickstarter will apply a 5% fee to the funds raised. If funding isn't successful, there are no charges.

Does Amazon (all Payments are handled via Amazon) charge any fees?
Yes. When a project is successful, Amazon will apply credit card processing fees, which work out to roughly 3-5%. For details on how the fee is calculated, please view the Amazon Payments fee details.

Does it cost money to list a project on Kickstarter?
No, starting a project is free.

So would this be something to take the place of what would traditionally be considered an "advance"?

Getting ppl to donate to a project like this is comparable to getting them to donate to a PayPal account for reading your website content. The only kickstarter projects that I have seen that have succeeded usually involve celebs like The Oatmeal (with a social network following of thousands) or, if you're a nobody, then your kickstarter project better involve children with cancer or some other drama that the corporately mainstream media and publishg companies can tap into to generate fee-good PR for themselves. Anyone else looking for funding, not so much.

Actually, almost 50% of Kickstarter campaigns achieve their funding targets. Practically none of them have celebrity involvement, and they're all creative endeavours, usually positive and quirky. Aren't facts great?

From the campaign page:

"Backing this project will guarantee a final book with finished product quality (editing, design, cover art, and marketing) that will rival that of a traditional publisher ... Any funds raised above the goal will go toward further development, advertising, and marketing."

i.e. not an advance, which is a personal fee for doing the writing.
