Indie Author Interview: R.M. Garry

Indie Author Interview with R.M. Garry - Author of the Contemporary Romance Beacon of Sound.

R.M. Garry is obsessed with turning her readers into drooling love slaves. Well, she actually spends most of her time trying to keep up with three active boys who never take naps.

Interview with R.M. Garry

Beacon of Sound (R.M. Garry)
Alan Kealey (Indie Author News): Who are your favorite writers, your favorite books, and who or what are your writing influences?
R.M. Garry: My two favorite books are Tuck Everlasting and Dracula. Tuck Everlasting was the first book that lit my imagination and made me love the different worlds you could visit in a book. Dracula was the first book that made me want to create my own world and write. My list of authors I love are so long that it would take up most of the interview. Honestly I pre-order a lot of books and wait like an addict for my authors to give me a fix. My cultural background and family life are my primary writing influences.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer?
I knew I wanted to be a writer the first time I read Dracula. I thought, now this is a story. I want to write stories too.

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote was about a girl running away from soul stealers. I am pretty sure that story was a little awful.

Tell us about your writing process. Do you have a writing routine?
I do not have a writing routine. I have a notebook and 1000 stick notes. My android phone has an app I use to write down ideas. When I am not working on homework or dealing with my three children I write.

"Creation happens anywhere."

Please, describe your desk/workplace.
Honestly my workplace is any free room in the house. There are times I have my laptop in the kitchen and type while I am cooking and other times I am working on my bed. There was even an instant where I woke up at 5 am with an idea and typed while sitting on the floor in my bedroom. Creation happens anywhere.

"The easiest part of writing is bringing the characters to life."

What do you find easiest about writing? What the hardest?

The easiest part of writing is bringing the characters to life. I love writing lines that are full of truth and sarcasm. The hardest part is the research. I spent over 20 hours searching for the perfect songs for Beacon of Sound. After a while, it felt as if my brain only spoke in melodies and chorus lines.

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
As a writer, I am able to pour my thoughts out without having to worry about someone's reaction. My character Marie has no problem with being mouthy and aggressive. I admire her ability to be herself no matter what anyone thinks.

R.M., please tell us a little about your Paranormal Romance Novel Beacon of Sound.
Marie is a counselor who spends more time helping her clients than she does living the truth. She has spent years creating an illusion of quiet and perfection around herself. No matter what evidence is presented, it is ignored. Marie refuses to give up her life even if it means living a lie. Patrick is an aggressive man who will stop at nothing to help Marie see the truth. His methods are extreme and manipulative. He does not apologize for treading the delicate line between good and evil in order to save Marie. There was a point in the book I thought “Patrick is psychotic”. Patrick and Marie eventually learn that there is no way to avoid both destiny and desire.

What inspired you to write the book?
Life inspired me to write the story. My home town of Immokalee is mentioned in the story. My experiences there and my life now helped create the tapestry for Beacon of Sound and the entire series.

Who do you see as your target audience and where can we buy the book?
My target audience is any adult who loves a good story. The story is steamy but it does take full ownership of the reader. My goal is to turn my readers into mindless drooling love slaves (insert evil laughter here). I think any adult with an open mind can enjoy my story.

What makes your book special?
My book explores Haitian culture, food, and myths. I have read hundreds of books but have never found any book that explored this culture that is full of passion, hope, and amazing food. Marie is a Haitian woman that owns every inch of her personality and makes no excuses for her behavior.

How would you describe the success of your book so far?
For me, success occurred the moment someone said “Oh my God R.M. that was an amazing story”. I expected to sell maybe 10 books. It seems that word of mouth has helped me sell a few more books than 10.

How long did it take it to write the book?
It took 6 months to write Beacon of Sound. I am a mother, wife, and full time employee so it takes a lot of concentration to juggle all of those balls while maintaining a small bit of sanity. In a perfect world, I would be able to write minus all distractions and could easily put out 6 to seven stories a year.

"Write with hunger in your heart."

Can you give some advice for other Authors regarding the writing process?
Fall into your writing. Write with hunger in your heart. You have to want the story so bad it becomes your shadow. This was the approach that finally help me complete Beacon of Sound.

Are you working on another book project? Can you tell us a little about it?
I am currently working on two projects. The first project is Beacon Holiday which is a novella from The Noir Dera Series. It is an update on the couple from Beacon of Sound and an introduction to the characters for book 2 of the series. The projected release time for the novella is November 2014. Hearts Unbound is another series that I am hoping to release by October 2014. Hearts Unbound focuses on dealing with loss and learning to love again. It is one of my toughest projects.

Where do you see the book market in 5 or 10 years? Will there be only eBooks and will book stores disappear like record stores disappeared?
I love eBooks but I hope bookstores stick around. It would be great to see the return of small bookstores. There is a life altering experience that happens when you walk into a small bookstore and find a treasure that you get to take home in a little brown bag. My greatest hope is that people never stop reading no matter what format they choose.

What is your e-reading device of choice?
Since I am a reading junkie, I am obsessed with both my nook and kindle fire. When both of them are charging, I use my android phone to access the nook and kindle apps. Yes I am really addicted to reading.

Do you write full-time or do you have a day job? When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I do have a job where I work 40 to 50 hours per week depending on how busy we are. Most of my time is spent staring at spreadsheets. My goal is to eventually move to writing full time.

Marie has everything a successful counselor could ever want: her mental health practice is thriving, she can help most clients without trying, and she’s married to a sexy, doting neurologist. Little does she know that a freight train of a man named Patrick Alvang is about to tear right through her quiet existence and turn the world as she knows it upside down.

Prince Patrick Alvang of the Noir Dera has one job to do, and his mission is to save a woman from her dangerous husband, no strings attached. That is, until he gets to know the damsel in distress and decides he wants to devour her instead. Saying that Marie is stubborn would be an understatement, so he’ll have to play dirty if he wants to save the damsel and claim Marie as his Na-Ou.

Saving a reluctant woman is hard work, but Patrick is sure to enjoy every last erotic second of his undertaking.

"This book was amazing, I finished it in 2 days. It has been a very long time since I was captivated by a story. I can't wait for the next one." - Reader Review
