On the night her daughter was born—seventeen weeks early—Jennifer Degl started a journal on a sheet of paper given to her by a nurse.

Once she was discharged from the hospital, a little blue notebook became Jennifer’s constant companion. Five months after the birth of her daughter, Jennifer went to write in her notebook; instead, she sat down and read her journal cover to cover. That’s when she knew she had to tell this story.

In her gripping memoir, Jennifer Degl brings her readers on an emotional roller coaster: from the decision to get pregnant despite warnings from her doctors—and nearly dying four times during her pregnancy—to the birth of her daughter, Joy, at twenty-three weeks, and this tiny baby’s fight to survive.

About the Author

Author Jennifer Degl
Author Jennifer Degl
As an only child, Jennifer Degl's daydreams always included being part of a large family. Her favorite television show was—and still is—Little House on the Prairie. When she and her husband, John, decided to try for a fourth child, neither of them had any inkling as to the tumultuous journey that lie ahead.

Those closest to Jennifer describe her as stubborn, exceptionally determined, and optimistic—and Jennifer agrees with them. And those are the exact traits that pulled her through her life-threatening pregnancy, the birth of her micro preemie baby, and the first four months of her micro preemie’s life in the NICU.

Jennifer is a wife, teacher, amateur astronomer and rock collector, but her favorite role is being a mom. She resides in Putnam County, NY, with her husband and four children.
